What Does a Business Intelligence Specialist Do?

A Business Intelligence Specialist focuses on data mining for the organization and providing a visual representation of the data. For most organizations, data is a very important factor in developing a strategic plan. As a result, the Business Intelligence Specialist takes the data and provides meaningful solutions for the strategic plan.

Their job duties include reporting on data mining, performance metrics, benchmarking, descriptive analytics, querying, statistical analysis, visual analysis, and data preparation.

Requirements

Regarding qualifications, Business Intelligence Specialists can come from a wide variety of degrees, experience, and other backgrounds. Ultimately, the business intelligence specialist should be a master of either business or analytics when staffing.

Overall, the analyst should have at least a Bachelor’s degree in computer and information science, accounting, finance, economics, business, management, or political science. Most businesses will only hire a specialist if they have a Master’s degree, though.

If the candidate does not have direct former experience, they should have some work in business analytics. For soft skills, they should have strong business tactics, leadership, and analytical thought. Furthermore, while there is no direct certification for a Business Intelligence Specialist, they may have a Certified Business Intelligence Professional (CBIP) certification (or something similar).
