A Network & Systems Administrator plays a critical role in maintaining the backbone of an organization’s IT infrastructure. This person ensures that networks and systems run smoothly, securely, and efficiently, keeping downtime to a minimum. Their work supports everything from daily operations to seamless communication and data exchange across the company.
Collaborating closely with IT teams and other stakeholders, the Network & Systems Administrator is responsible not only for reacting to issues, but also for proactively preventing them. They monitor performance, optimize configurations, and implement upgrades, all while maintaining strong security measures and adhering to best practices.
Responsibilities

Install, configure, manage, and maintain local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), servers, and related hardware and software

Monitor network performance and system health; proactively identify and resolve bottlenecks or failures

Implement and enforce network security measures, including firewalls, access controls, and patch management

Provide technical support and troubleshooting for network and system-related issues

Add users, manage permissions, and maintain directory services or authentication systems

Maintain documentation for network configurations, system setups, and incident reports

Coordinate with vendors and manage hardware/software procurement

Plan and execute upgrades, migrations, and implementations with minimal disruption
Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent experience)

Proven experience administering enterprise networks and systems

Strong knowledge of networking protocols (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, etc.) and system operating environments (Windows Server, Linux, virtualization)

Familiarity with network hardware (switches, routers, firewalls), monitoring tools, and performance tuning

Solid understanding of security best practices and risk mitigation techniques

Excellent problem‑solving and troubleshooting abilities

Clear communication skills with both technical teams and non‑technical stakeholders

Relevant certifications (such as Cisco CCNA, CompTIA Network+, Microsoft MCSA, or similar) are a plus

The annual salary for this role typically spans roughly $82,000 to $115,000, depending on your level of experience and technical skills.
